Supporters Give Back to Missouri Western
Charlene "Chuck" (Riemen) Bunten '52 and her husband, Bill, are members of both Missouri Western's Clock Tower Society and the Western League for Excellence because they understand the importance of giving back.
After a "great experience" at the St. Joseph Junior College, Chuck transferred to Baker University, where she met Bill, and they were married a week before she graduated. Bill also graduated from Washburn University School of Law, and the couple supports all three universities.
"Supporting universities is a way of life," Chuck says. "If you are successful in life, you want to give back. We realize the value of an education and where it has taken us."
The Clock Tower Society is an honorary society of donors who have made the Missouri Western Foundation a beneficiary of their estate and financial planning. The Western League for Excellence is an honorary society of donors in support of the university's mission, and contributions are undesignated.
"I think the university knows best where the money needs to go. We want to give to the League and let the school decide," she says.
Chuck noted that people helped her and her husband with their education, and they feel like they should do that for others.
"We can look back on what others have done for us, and we need to do the same thing," she says.
The Buntens, who live in Topeka, Kansas, visited Missouri Western's current campus for the first time this past spring.
"I was so impressed with the campus," Chuck says. "I had a ‘coming home' feeling, and it felt good, very good."
